    About Lapaloosa

    Melanie Cable-Alexander

Lapaloosa, meaning 'beautiful object or thing', is the creation of journalist Melanie Cable-Alexander. Her aim is to bring together stunning bespoke homeware hand-crafted by top British designer-makers.

    Sourcing pieces from Top makers:

Melanie and her team have scoured the UK for pieces that can be made to order by talented artisans who exhibit the highest level of craftsmanship and who can also be commissioned to make wonderful one-off creations for interiors and exteriors.

    Built To Last:

Since our craftsmen are using skills that are on many occasions honed down and learnt through several generations, they are creating real investment pieces and heirlooms to be relished in the future.

    How We Work:

You can purchase anything you see on the site directly on the order tag or contact us and we'll take an order for you. Each product is a made to order one-off so can be tailored to your exact requirements if you wish to make it totally unique to you. If you would like to see an item on our site in the flesh, please contact us.

    Bit of History:

For many years Melanie was at Country Life magazine for whom she ran a hugely successful series called Living National Treasures about people crafting items for some of the most glorious and grandest houses in the UK. It became a book and led to an exhibition in Bond Street, London.

At the time, she discovered that many of Britain's skills were dying out and it was this that inspired her to create Lapaloosa and also to found The Slow Furniture Movement.

The meaning of The Slow Furniture Movement:

Based on the Slow Food Movement which started in Italy with the arrival of the first MacDonald's in the country, Slow Furniture is designed to illustrate what it requires make a beautiful, bespoke object that takes time and care to make and will bring with it several lifetimes of use and enjoyment'

The Opposite Of The Fast Flat-Pack Culture:

We are the antithesis of the cheap, quick fix, flat-pack culture that has come to dominate our times, where many items last a few years, if not months and end up in waste heaps that litter our land.
